Magellanes: Magellan was born in northern Portugal in 1480. In Oporto. He was the son of Rui Vaz Ines Magallaes and Moutinho. Brother Duarte de Sousa, Diogo de Sousa, Isabel de Magallaes, Genebra of Magallaes and Magallaes Aires. Fernando's father, Rui Magallaes was noble knight of the house of D. Afonso, Count of Faro, lord mayor of Aveiro and Estremoz. Rui was mayor of Aveiro, which is documented in 1486; between 1472 and 1478 he held positions of ordinary judge, prosecutor and council chamber in Oporto. His brother Aires Magallaes followed an ecclesiastical career, receiving subdiaconate in Braga in 1509. Magellan had about ten years when he came to serve as a page at the court of Queen Leonor, consort of John II of Portugal. He married in Seville in 1517 with Beatriz Barbosa, his relative, daughter of Diogo Barbosa and Maria Caldeira, and had two children: Rodrigo, who died very young, and Carlos who died at birth.
Juan Sebastian Elcano: He was born Guetaria in 1476 and died in 1526, was a Spanish sailor who participated in the first round the world, putting the head of the expedition after the death of Ferdinand Magellan in the 1521. He was the son of Catherine the port and Juan Domingo Elcano. From a young age, he enlisted in fishing and commercial boats, so it took great fishing experience. In 1509 he joined the military expedition against Algiers which was directed by Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros. At the back of it, he settled in Seville, and it was there that I learned of the project being prepared by the Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan to discover a route to the Indies by the West through a step or narrow in the south of America which lead to the spice Islands without skirting the African continent or through Portuguese dominions. That was how in 1519 Elcano enlisted in Magellan's expedition as foreman of the Conception, one of five that made the squad ship.
How they started the travel: In 1459 there was the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire. This fact led to the disruption of the great eastern trade routes that had been maintained since the Middle Ages (the route of the silk and spice followed by the Venetian Marco Polo) that roamed India, China and the islands of Polynesia, and running through Constantinople and nurturing the European markets, which coveted these products by major advantages that provided them. For this main reason, and that in the VXI century breakthroughs in navigation: the compass, the astrolabe, the portolan maps or circulate helm develop. European sailors could went into deep seas and unknown order to restore that longed communication path. The first expeditions made by the Portuguese who penetrated into the south Atlantic, bordering the African continent and beyond in the year 1492 came the great discovery of Columbus. This was a drastic change in the cartographic and geographic patterns. Therefore Castilla and Portugal decided to divide the world, this fact called treaty of Tordesillas. However, this race to get to the spices was not finished. Neither Columbus never arrived to Japan, which was what he wanted, and Bernal Dias and Vasco de Gama as well both arrived to the Espacias Islands or Moluccas. Ferdinand Magellan, a sailor of Portuguese origin, and other marine Basque origin named Juan Sebastian Elcano, launched a project. To conclude what their predecessors had failed to find. A step towards the islands of spices and restoring trade routes. The Capitulations of Valladolid: It was a set of documents were if the conquistador, in this case Fernindad Magallanes reached to the objective he proposed he would all the things that he accorded to the King. He was granted the title of Magellan Governor and Adelantado of all lands "discovered" were signed on March 22, 1519 in Valladolid between Charles I of Spain and Fernindad Magallanes. The first signature belongs to King Charles I of Spain and the second signature belongs to Fernando Magallanes The Expedition: Thus, (the project was presented initial shape the Portuguese King Manuel I, who rejected), finally an expedition to the service of the Spanish Crown, led by Magellan is organized. After signing the capitulation of Valladolid, by the king Charles I of Spain, September 20, 1519 he left the expedition of the port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda with five ships (Victoria, commanded by Elcano and Santiago , San Antonio and Trinidad in command of Magellan and Concepción) and 237 men to make the first voyage of global circumnavigation. The goal was simply to try to complete the unfinished route of Columbus, and the route to the east (Africa) was vetoed for Castilla because they established the Treaty of Tordesillas, the way forward was always sailing westward. The main problem of this expedition was that the route was completely unknown in the sixteenth century and not the length so huge expanse of land that would have to go around to the Pacific (the coast of Brazil, Argentina, to the point of Cape wise Horn to cross the strait that now bears the name of Magellan, Patagonia). So they joined the lack of knowledge of geography and seas must sail, was joined by a number of drawbacks such as storms, riots, desertions (as the ship San Antonio to return to Sevilla), drastic temperature changes (from the waters tropical Central America, the icy weather south end of the American continent, to the warm waters of the equatorial Pacific), diseases and clashes with the indigenous population, who were a constant during this titanic trip. In this of the chronicler Antonio Pigafetta we can observe the discomfort and rugged that resulted cruise:"We sailed for three months and twenty days without any fresh food. The cookies we ate were no longer bread, but a powder mixed with worms and imbued with rat urine. The water we had to drink was rotten. We were forced to not starve, to stake leather pieces that were so hard they had to dip them in the sea four or five days to be ablandasen. (...) We suffered the attack of some kind of disease that we gums swelled to cover our teeth (scurvy). And those who suffered could not prove any food. Nineteen of us murieron."They skirted the coast of South America, crossed the strait, went into the Pacific correcting the path and climbing to the islands in the tropics of Capricorn south, which called Islands of Sharks for the many they found there, and Islands St. Paul; they reached the Marianas Islands or Islas de los Ladrones, like them baptized, which is the deepest trench in the world with approximately eleven thousand meters, and where local legends told that inhabited a sea monster, then get to the Islands Philippines, where Magellan died from clashes with the population of the island. On March 6, 1591, Magellan and his crew found an island, took the opportunity to rest and gather food. Soon would come to that many indigenous island gifts for these new (visitors). In the Moluccas, Magellan and his men discovered they had reached the Far East, fulfilling the project of Christopher Columbus. Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan called a Cebuano tribe led by the chieftain Lapu-Lapu, on the Philippine island of Mactan, so Juan Sebastián Elcano took command of the expedition. Magellan's death is an event that is explained by the need to have these expeditionary receiving help from the inhabitants of those areas that were arriving, for the supply of food and drinking water was extremely difficult for real knowledge is not had the land on which they were. Therefore, Magellan, intended to achieve a stable alliance with the natives of Mactan in exchange for eliminating a rival tribe. This was his big mistake to underestimate the forces of the inhabitants of these islands, because according to set this historian cited above, Magallanes all effective is not carried into battle."...He prepared three skiffs and sixty men who believed enough to fight with guns to the crowd of Indians who did not know them, not wanting to hear the advice of the king of Zebu and Captain Juan Serrano, who tried to dissuade him to step so risky as reckless and foolhardy".
Magallanes sure of his chances, left apart from the men in the boats for guard it, and shook his captains to enter into combat. The result was expected, Magellan was wounded in the head and leg and fell shot through by the spears of the natives of Mactan in 1521 along with much Castilians sailors planted there battle. Therefore, continuing with a curse sixteenth century explorer Magellan also reached the Moluccas Islands, although they were a few days of travel. With the death of Magellan. Juan Sebastián Elcano, had the homeric mission to reach to the islands of spices and bring back all remaining crew to Spain. Thus, the captain of the expedition sailed to the Moluccas, where he landed in Tidore Island, where the sailors got a large shipment of spices, and made his way back across the Indian Ocean and along the African coast. After three years, the journey was full of adversities and illness, the sailors finally reached to the port of Sanlúcar on September 6, 1522 with one ship, the Victoria, and only 18 survivors. This expedition was the first world tour, the complete circumnavigation of the globe, which finally proved that the medieval theories about the flatness of the earth was a lie. Also he demostrated, not only the magnitude and ignorance that had the world in the Middle Ages, but he also discovered a lot of new species, animals, vegetables and a multiculturalism that inhabited the planet. He changed the scheme on the known world had in the sixteenth century. Juan Sebastian Elcano said when he arrived to the Iberian Peninsula: "And most know your Majesty that what we have is more estimate and we have discovered and turned around to all the corners of the world, going to the West have returned to the east." 6 September, 1522 Sanlúcar De Barrameda, Crown of Castile Earlier today we had knewn that it has completed the first circumnavigation of the world, and we had found a new trading route for spices, so instead of surrounding Africa, for this moment all the sailings that wanted to bring species for the crown had to do the same route as Juan Sebastian Elcano. Also of the 234 men who participated in the sailing, only 18 returned to Spain in command of Elcano after expiry of the temporary all the roundness of the Earth. The expedition took place 2 years, 11months and 17 days. Only arrived to the Crown of Castile one boat, the nao Victoria. Also we have to hurt the death Of Fernindad Magallanes that when the expedition started two years ago he was the captain, but Elcano told us that he had killed in the Philipines in a battle with another tribe of this island in the year 1521. Also Elcano finished the expedition that Colombus wanted to do. And the crown will have some more money as the species are very expensives. With this expedition we did big advances in the geography sense. Elcano named the islands where Magallanes was killed Philipines in honour of the king. Apart of the dead of Magallanes we have to hurt the death of almost all the crew. The crew had brought a large quantity of species. With this "discovery" the expeditions will go further.
